Labour Day (or Labor Day for our American readers) will typically vary throughout Australia, although it is celebrated on the first Monday in October in New South Wales, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory. However, both Victoria and Tasmania will celebrate Labour Day on the second Monday in October, whereas other territories may celebrate in March or May.
Labour Day specifically celebrates the 8-hour work day, which was initially introduced in the late 1850′s. Up until this time, workers generally had to work 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week, although the 5-day week was finally adopted in 1948. It was British Socialist, Robert Owen, who initially stated that people should work for 8 hours a day, enjoy recreational activities for 8 hours a day, and sleep for 8 hours a day.
