SIP phone usage

SIP overview

SIP is a modern protocol for voice and video over IP communications.  It is one of the fastest growing ways of voice/video communications through internet, it is also one of the best quality, cheapest and easiest in installation and management.  SIP is an open-source protocol and is widely used by numerous developers and manufacturers of PC-based softphones (many are free), hardware SIP-enabled phone sets, SIP gateways for connecting SIP with conventional phone networks and SIP-enabled PBX systems for use in offices.  Read more about SIP on Wikipedia or search the web to learn more about it.

SIP calls with Buzport

Best thing about SIP is that using it is totally free, as it is an integral part of free internet.  Using SIP with Buzport services makes international calling even more economical.

Buzport customers can use SIP to make calls from PC or SIP-enabled hardware phones to mobile phones, landlines or other internet-based phones.  When SIP is used, the originating “leg” of the call is free and the customer only pays for connecting to the destination phone.  See Buzport rates page for explanation of how the rates are calculated.

To use SIP with Buzport you need a SIP-enabled hardware phone or PC-based SIP softphone.  Check internet shops and your local stores for hardware phones.  Most users find it most convenient to use one of the numerous SIP softphones, many good ones are totally free like X-Lite dialer.

To make a Buzport SIP call:

  1. Ensure that your SIP hardware phone or softphone is turned on or started and is ready to accept calls;
  2. On Make a Call page in your account area select SIP number in “My Phone” drop-down list, enter or select a destination number (use valid international number format!), press “Connect” button;
  3. Your SIP phone will start ringing instantly, answer the call, wait for your destination number to answer, enjoy the conversation.  To end the call simply hang up or press “End Call” button on your smartphone.
